Biography
Gakunju Kaigwa
Although he began his career in painting, Gakunju Kaigwa discovered his real passion in the early 1980’s as a sculptor. Born in 1958 and raised in Kenya, Kaigwa is a seasoned sculptor who holds a Master’s degree in Public Art from the University of Dundee in Scotland.
He works with wood, glass, steel, resin, bronze and many other materials using each medium to express different ideas and forms. Most of Kaigwa sculptures are figurative and envision the human body.
He likes to portray human conditions, and in some of his works you can detect a “commentary” note; the
works are not meant to be critical but are intended to evoke thought and emotion from the viewer.
Kaigwa continues to redefine contemporary African design through sustainable craftsmanship and indigenous materials.Having worked as an artist for over 30 years, Kaigwa is represented by the Almasi Art Agency and hiss work may be found installed in a number of public spaces both around Kenya and internationally.
