A VISIT TO THE WHITE CUBE GALLERY-BERMONDSEY
08 MAY 2024
Inspiration. This is the fuel that drives us. It is the creative juice that is responsible for the artistic output, and in the AAA visit to WHITE CUBE GALLERY in Bermondsey, London, it was there in bucketloads. This is hugely down to the featured artist; Georg Baselitz. For the German post-war artist, this marks his return to White Cube Bermondsey for the first time in eight years with the solo exhibition ‘A Confession of My Sins’.
In the body of new work produced during an intensive year in the studio, the exhibition features large-scale paintings and a selection of works on paper in which the artist, now 86, surveys the past six and a half decades of his practice.
The show is one seen by the artist through the retrospective lens of old age, Baselitz looks back on a lifetime of lived experience and artistic invention, paying homage to key inspirations, motifs and subject matter, as well as unearthing pictorial references from his youth with strong contrasts for both his human and animal subjects.
A personal confrontation with crisis compels Baselitz and the work he creates, in which abstraction also serves as an abolition of the image. ‘I was born into a destroyed order, a destroyed landscape, a destroyed people, a destroyed society,’ he says, describing post-war Germany (courtesy of White Cube Gallery). Georg Baselitz is one of the most highly regarded collectable post war artists in the world and in Almasi Art Agency’s visit to the White Cube Gallery, we examine the cross-cultural aspects of art and artists. Parallels drawn vis a vis the stark contrasts in subjects, mediums and executions, driven by the fuel of inspiration.
